We vlogen over Longyearbyen en ook over ons schip MS Fram dat in de baai al op ons lag te wachten. Aangezien er slechts zo\u2019n 2400 mensen wonen is stad een groot woord en de inwoners zelf hebben het over \u201chun dorp\u201d als ze over Longyearbyen praten.<\/p>\n<p>Longyearbyen dankt zijn naam aan John Munroe Longyear, de eigenaar van de Arctic Coal Company uit Boston, die hier in 1906 een nederzetting stichtte om de arbeiders in zijn steenkoolmijnen te huisvesten. Het werd Longyear City genoemd, dat later in het Noors Longyearbyen werd. Vandaag de dag is er nog maar een kolenmijn actief die in handen is van een Noors bedrijf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.22.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Na de ondertekening van het Spitsbergenverdrag in 1925 werd Svalbard een Noorse gemeente, maar wel met een bijzonder status waardoor het zo\u2019n internationale regio is. Het heeft een eigen democratisch gekozen raad met bevoegdheden voor het lokale bestuur en iedereen kan er werken zonder een visa nodig te hebben. De voertaal is Noors maar er werken mensen uit heel de wereld, aangetrokken door het avontuur, de bijzondere leefomstandigheden, research mogelijkheden, of om te studeren aan Svalbard\u2019s eigen universiteit UNIS.<\/p>\n<p>Longyearbyen is geen schoonheid maar heeft zeker karakter. Door de permafrost is het niet mogelijk om buizen in te graven, dus alles wat we in onze steden normaal verstoppen, is hier zichtbaar. Door de permafrost staan alle huizen op palen. Er is een hoofdstraat met winkels, restaurants, en pubs. Er zijn hotels, een school, sportschool, theater, supermarkt, en een ziekenhuis. Er is een brouwerij, recycle centrum, een blues festival, Svalbard Pride en zelfs een eigen krant. Wil je meer weten over het dagelijks leven in Longyearbyen volg dan de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@CeciliaBlomdahl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube van Cecilia Blomdahl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We hadden maar weinig tijd om in Longyearbyen door te brengen, bovendien was het ontzettend druk omdat er een groot Italiaans cruiseschip in de haven lag. Gelukkig konden we met de groep naar het restaurant aan de zuidrand van Longyearbyen lopen waar we zouden gaan lunchen, zodat we toch nog aardig wat van het dorp konden zien.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3>Wetenswaardigheden over Longyearbyen<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Alle inwoners moeten leren om met een geweer om te gaan.<\/li>\n<li>Buiten Longyearbyen moet je altijd een geweer bij de dragen om je te beschermen tegen ijsberen. Er mag alleen in zelfverdediging op een ijsbeer geschoten worden.<\/li>\n<li>Het is niet ongewoon om een rendier op straat tegen te komen.<\/li>\n<li>Er is 1 supermarkt, maar verbazingwekkend goed bevoorraad.<\/li>\n<li>Longyearbyen heeft een universiteit met 350 studenten.<\/li>\n<li>Overal zijn de stille getuigen te vinden van het mijnbouwverleden, dit zijn monumenten die beschermd worden.<\/li>\n<li>Er is een groot verloop in inwoners, gemiddeld woont men niet langer dan 7 jaar in Longyearbyen.<\/li>\n<li>Er is geen bejaardenhuis.<\/li>\n<li>Er worden geen kinderen geboren.<\/li>\n<li>Er wordt niemand (meer) begraven omdat lichamen niet ontbinden in de permafrost.<\/li>\n<li>Het is verboden om katten te importeren.<\/li>\n<li>2,5 maanden per jaar is het 24 uur per dag donker en 4 maanden is het 24 uur per dag licht.<\/li>\n<li>Longyearbyen heeft een wegennet van slechts 50 km. Het is verboden om off-road te rijden.
