Tijdens onze eerste dag in Longyearbyen gingen we op excursie naar Camp Barentz en bezochten we het Svalbard Museum.<\/h3>\n

Op 25 juni, onze eerste dag in Svalbard vertrokken we na de lunch met een bus naar onze eerste excursie: Camp Barentz.<\/p>\n

Camp Barentz ligt zo\u2019n 12 kilometer buiten Longyearbyen aan de voet van de Breinosa berg, recht onder Mijn 7, de enige mijn die in Svalbard nog in gebruik is.<\/p>\n

Aan de rand van Longyearbyen staat HET bord waar iedereen mee op de foto wil. Het betekent dat vanaf dit punt het verplicht is om een geweer te dragen omdat er ijsberen kunnen zijn. Meestal komen ze niet zo dicht bij de stad, maar het is mogelijk en het is in het verleden ook gebeurd. In dit verlaten landschap maakten we ook kennis met de snijdende Spitsbergense wind en werden we ons goed bewust van het temperatuurverschil van zo\u2019n 30\u00b0C met Itali\u00eb waar we net vandaan waren gekomen.<\/p>\n

Hier zagen we ook de eerste rendieren. Dit zijn Spitsbergenrendieren die over heel Svalbard voorkomen en goed bestand zijn tegen het barre klimaat.<\/p>\n

In de replica van Het Behouden Huys van Willem Barentsz werd er verteld over hoe deze Nederlandse zeevaarder de eilanden van Svalbard ontdekte. In 1596 begon hij aan zijn derde expeditie op zoek naar de noordelijke route naar Oost-Azi\u00eb. Tijdens deze dramatische laatste reis van Barentsz stuitte hij op de eilandengroep die hij vernoemde naar de spitse bergtoppen die zich tegen de hemel boven deze ruige kusten aftekenden: Spitsbergen.<\/p>\n

Barentsz\u2019s reis met zijn schip Witte Swaen bracht hem verder naar het oosten toen hij de zee\u00ebn tussen Svalbard en Nova Zembla ging onderzoeken. In het noorden van Nova Zembla kwam het schip vast te zitten in het ijs. Van het hout van hun eigen schip werd een huis gebouwd, dat bekent staat als Het Behouden Huys. Hier overwinterde Barentsz met zijn bemanning onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden. In de lente bouwden ze een sloep waarmee de zeventien overlevenden naar de bewoonde wereld terugkeerden. Willem Barentsz overleed een week na het vertrek. Na alle ontberingen zouden slecht twaalf opvarenden in Nederland terugkeren.<\/p>\n

Svalbard Museum<\/h3>\n

Hierna brachten we een bezoek aan. het Svalbard Museum in Longyearbyen waar voorwerpen uit de geschiedenis van Spitsbergen en exposities van lokale planten en dieren getoond worden. Hier leerden we meer over het ecosysteem van Svalbard, de geschiedenis van de mijnbouw, en de flora en fauna.<\/p>\n
